Farmers Market on the Noordermarkt
The history of the fair began in 1987, when Henri Wallentin, owner of a cafe on Noordermarkt Square, began to put up stalls of fresh fruit and vegetables on the street on Saturdays in order to attract more customers. The townspeople liked the initiative so much that the local Saturday market, which had been operating on the square for years, was soon displaced by farmers and lovers of local produce. The fair on Noordermarkt has become a real social phenomenon – today people even come here from other cities. There is a large selection of herbs, spices and mushrooms, collected not only in the Dutch forests, but also brought from France and Lithuania.
